We'd been told by lots of people that we needed to hit the Badlands of South Dakota, so it was on our agenda from day one. Now, all of the folks who told us about the Badlands were moving from East to West, so they're really the first truly striking landscapes you hit. we, on the other hand, had fallen in L-O-V-E with Wyoming so the Badlands were, like, stripey Wyoming. Which is not to say we didn't like it, but it wasn't quite as miraculous as we were expecting. However, we did spy a neat black and red beetle which I picked up to examine ("I can see it perfectly fine when it's on the ground," says Ben), and we heard birds calling to one another across the rocks (Whipporwhils?). It was eerily quiet there.
