I have to preface this by saying that I got this idea from the lovely and talented MatchGirl who posted her Stratego Clock in a craft forum I read. I flipped out for it and asked if I could copy her, because my brother loves the game and would die for this clock. She gave me permission (for which I'm thankful), and Matthew loved it. Be nice -- don't copy her. Find your own game.

So, I bought a vintage board on eBay. I'm sure you could find something cool at your local thrift store, but I needed something specific. First, I cut the foam core a quarter inch smaller on all sides than the board. The foam core is necessary to stiffen the game board and prevent it from collapsing on itself due to the folding-seam. Then, I punched a hole in the center of the board (using a combination of a pencil and the knife) that snugly fit the clock stem.

After removing all of the hands and stuff, I applied some epoxy to the front of the clockworks and crammed the stem through the hole in the board. Properly centered, I let the epoxy set. Meanwhile, I cut out a clockworks-sized square in the foam core. I smeared epoxy all over the back of the game board paying special attention to the seam in the center of the board. I lowered the foam core over the clockworks and let the whole thing set. Special note: because I wanted to make sure I got a really good bond, I cut a small hole in my left over foam core. I set the whole game board face down (with the clock peg poking into the hole) so that I could put weights (CDs and DVDs) on the foam core I just epoxied. I left the whole rigging like that for a night.

Once everything was dry, I flipped the thing over, put the hands on, and epoxied the game pieces where the hour markers should go. Yaaaaaay!

The whole danged clock.

Total time spent: approximately ninety minutes
